Goatweed Leafwing
Anaea andria

Observation date: October 23, 2018
Submitted by: WINGSaloftinKS
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Went hiking in a densely wooded area on the west side of Clinton Lake, about 1/4 mile from the lake. Saw this butterfly flying up fairly high into a huge Bur Oak, that was also being visited by a Downy Woodpecker and some very small sparrows. Then it flew down, toward me and around me, would land for a little bit on the ground (sometimes blending in well with the fall leaves), fly again about 10' away, land on the ground, fly another short distance, etc. I just kept following it and taking photos, as I'd never seen one of these in Kansas before! Size: Approx. 2.75-3". Weather: Beautiful sunny skies, approx. 70 degrees, light breeze.
