Polyphemus moth
Antheraea polyphemus

Observation date: September 29, 2018
Submitted by: Flyptrpan
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I observed this giant caterpillar on my back door frame on my house almost 3 weeks ago. I took a pic and then took another about 12 hours later of it starting to spin its cocoon. I’ve been tracking it every day since by taking two pictures a day. I have a little following on my Instagram account with people following. I’m looking for any kind of information as to what kind of moth this might be. I never saw it on any kind of plant or leaves, but I know there are oak trees nearby. It was just on the back of my house one morning. Our weather here in Oklahoma has started to change to cooler fall temperatures. Thanks so much and I’m looking forward to hearing back!

Coordinator notes: Oak is a common food plant for this species. Sometimes the caterpillars spin cocoons in the oddest places like this. The moth should emerge in spring, probably in late March or April at your locale.
