Manduca sexta

Observation date: September 05, 2018
Date notes: Found on the ground, near a street lamp.
Submitted by: Eagleye102979
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found on an overcast morning, laying on the ground under a street light.
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: November 16, 2018
Coordinator notes: While it definitely bears resemblance to the Waved sphinx like you suggested, this moth is actually a Carolina sphinx. The forewings (what you see here) of the Carolina sphinx are darker and differently marked than those of the Waved sphinx. Also, if you ever got a look at this moth's body, you would have seen a row of 6 large orange spots running down each side of the abdomen. Cool find; usually people find the nuisance caterpillars, not the adult moths!
