Coordinator notes: Correct identification. Massive numbers of these butterflies are sometimes found in shortgrass prairie habitat at the base of the foothills (i.e. Coyote Ridge Natural Area in Larimer County), where their caterpillars decimate large colonies of wild asters. However, their caterpillars are rarely a pest in gardens, as Field Crescents tend to avoid more urbanized areas.
