Woodland Skipper
Ochlodes sylvanoides

Observation date: August 12, 2018

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This butterfly was on what I believe is a thyme plant, which also had many bees. When I first got close for a photo, it "jumped" off about as fast as a grasshopper can, and flew to a nearby dandelion leaf. It stayed there and was very calm as I approached again, allowing me to get within a few inches with my phone for photos for several seconds before it jumped/flew away again. It really did move quite quickly in the initial takeoff. It stayed in the yard and settled again on the thyme plant, giving us a chance to photograph it with a better camera. The day was mildly overcast and the temps were in the 70's.
