Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Butterfly was perching and occasionally patrolling a stretch of gravel path at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. Saw this same butterfly perched on the same leaf at 3:21pm as I was leaving the refuge. Temperature 74 F when first observed, 80 F when observed the second time. Clear, sunny day. Little or no breeze. Elevation 115 ft above sea level. Perched on a Pacific Ninebark-Physocarpus capitalus leaf, this is the second time I found this species of butterfly using this species of plant as a perch along a path. First time was also along the Tualatin River, but in a City of Tualatin park along an asphalt path. Also saw, but unable to photograph visually small ( compared to Woodland Skipper), orange skippers (maybe 4 individuals) and brown butterflies (maybe 6 individuals in different places along the path) that might be a Common Wood Nymph as I have photographed that species on the refuge in years past.
