Observation notes: caterpillar 45mm long, on aspen (Populus tremuloides), it was on a live twig with leaves that I pruned, in three hours it has not moved from the twig it is on, when threatened or disturbed it lifts it's head and reveals two black and orange crescents (visible in second photograph) on its back between leg segments 2 & 3, and 3 &4, left alone it flattens out on the branch and is nearly invisible as it conceals the bright crescents
