Observation notes: I spotted and photographed this moth today in the back yard of my home in Berwyn, IL, which is located about nine miles west of downtown Chicago. It's a typical summer day here, though 70 degrees is not as warm or as humid as it might might. The sky was somewhat overcast, wind was moderate. My wife has planted a variety of flowering perennials in in front and back yard which attract butterflies and a rare hummingbird. This creature's appearance was so startling that I stopped my lawn mower and got out my telephone camera and took a few pictures, and transferred them to my computer where I cropped them to enlarge the image of the moth. I had no idea that it was a moth, in fact, until my wife suggested that that's what it is. An internet search yields many pictures of moths that look like hummingbirds but I wasn't able to find a photo that matches this moth with a species name. I'll be most grateful for your help in making an ID.
