Ceanothus silkmoth
Hyalophora euryalus

Observation date: July 17, 2018
Submitted by: ericofShaw
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The caterpillar was crawling across a stone stair step leading to our front door. Lots of birds around, so I figured I'd give it some help and placed it under some bushes on some moss where it might be less likely to be found. Surrounding vegetation is principally Douglas Fir, Juniper trees, and Madrone, with Oregon grape, wild roses, and other native plants indigenous to the PNW region. No ornamental plants in the neighborhood. Today is a very warm day, the fifth or more in a series of atypically hot days, in the low 80s (atypical for being so close to the water).
