Spotted Tussock Moth or Yellow-Spotted Tiger Moth
Lophocampa maculata

Observation date: September 09, 2011
Submitted by: sgguthart
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This caterpillar was found on a Thinleaf Alder. The Alder was growing on the edge of a lake and near a thicket of Willows.
Status: Resident
Verified by: A_baldini
Verified date: March 12, 2018
Coordinator notes: Correct ID; a very one-of-a-kind caterpillar. Alders are actually one of their less commonly used host plants (they normally prefer willows and poplars). With a willow thicket nearby, I’m surprised the adult moth chose to lay her eggs on alder instead of willow.
Checklist region(s): Larimer County, United States, Colorado
