Corn Earworm Moth
Helicoverpa zea

Observation date: August 20, 2017
Submitted by: Anne Wills
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Mostly sunny with a few large cumulus clouds, a little humid, low 80's, no breeze. The green-eyed moth? was working intently on a clump of flowers on a waist-high bush, next to the boardwalk, in full sun. Nearby were cranberry, blueberry, serviceberry, ferns, reindeer moss, phlox, alder, spruce. On one side of the boardwalk the terrain was mostly low vegetation, less than knee-high, with widely spaced small islands of spruce and other trees. On the other side of the boardwalk was the primary swamp area, with tall spruce trees, medium trees, head-high ferns, mosses, thick waist-high bushes, dead bare trees.
