Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: July 20, 2017
Date notes: Initially spotted when leaving on gravel driveway 7/18 ~ 9 am. It was like driving through a snowstorm. Amount of butterflies has decreased each subsequent day, although they are still plentiful enough to see when walking outdoors or driving out our driveway. Also, spotted some as far away as 5 miles at a cousin, who also lives on a unpaved road.

Observation notes: Discovered a snowstorm of these guys while driving down our driveway on 7-18-17 ~ 9 am, took chair out and sat in driveway on the 20th for a couple of hours and took these pics. Literally hundreds of them flying around, but not as many on the driveway as on 7-18-17. We have ~ 4 acres of wildflowers & wildgrasses on either side of our driveway and across our back yard. They seemed to especially like the Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), which was in full bloom. My pics were taken with an IPad.
