Green Comma
Polygonia faunus

Observation date: June 05, 2017
Submitted by: RichHubie
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Warm sunny day. When I realized this butterfly wasn't the usual Satyr Comma I normally see here in the county I began to research which one it was. The lack of a "black spot in the middle of the HW" and no 'double' black spots in the " inner margin of the FW" narrowed my search to a Hoary Comma. All Commas, except for Satyr Commas, are rarely reported in Mendocino County. Oreas Commas look similar but I couldn't find a picture or drawing of one without the double black spots on the FW. Underwings were not available for a picture.
