Nessus sphinx
Amphion floridensis

Observation date: April 03, 2017
Submitted by: Bluesandycat
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I have never seen one of these. I spotted it in the Walmart garden center in Danville, Kentucky! It was almost dusk. It quickly went from flower to flower then quickly took off to the other side of the patio. It was warm outside and just before we had a downpour. Its wings beat as quickly as a humingbird. It had a little tail too. Amazing!!

Coordinator notes: I am a regional coordinator for butterflies and caterpillars. I am not a coordinator for moths, however, I feel comfortable with ID of some species, including members of the sphinx moth family. This is a nice photo of a Nessus Sphinx in action. If you are interested in moths and butterflies, I would get involved with the Kentucky Lepidopterists Society. They are a lovely resource for information. Plus, one of the founding members is none other than Charlie Covell, the author of the Peterson Field Guide to Moths of the Eastern US.
