Coordinator notes: This is a female Great Spangled Fritillary, S. cybele, the southwestern Colorado subspecies is carpenterii. From what you said, I corrected the county to Montezuma, presuming you hiked Priest Gulch north from Colorado State Highway 145 since you said you hiked only a short distance. You would need to hike a longer distance to reach the Dolores County line. I have found this commonly just down the highway and north on Taylor Creek. Mike
