Reticulated Fruitworm Moth
Cenopis reticulatana

Observation date: August 10, 2016

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Small (about 1 cm) colorful moth flew from between particles of washed crushed stone near stairway to Quarry Pugmill Operator's shack (immediate area is large flat pad of crushed stone). The moth flew in a low zigzag pattern for 3-4 ft and landing and ducking out of sight between rocks again. Intrigued I collected my cell phone from shack and once again "flushed" the moth by nearing its hiding place. After another low zigzag flight of about the same length as the first it landed and remained in view allowing me to obtain the submitted image. A moment later it again flew about 4-5 ft and vanished among the rocks again. I did not attempt to flush it again. It's interesting to note the shack where this moth was seen sits in the middle of the Quarry shipping yard which is a huge expanse of bare ground and massive piles of product crushed to varying sizes. Interlaced with conveyor belts and roads there are a few water retaining ponds and not much else. Aside from some clumps of stubborn grasses and thistles around the Pugmill shack, a few conveyor supports and a couple areas near around the water retention ponds the area is practically devoid of vegetation. From where it was seen to the nearest "green" area is 400-500 yards so this tiny moth crossed a lot of inhospitable territory before setting down at the Pugmill shack.
