Bedstraw hawkmoth
Hyles gallii

Observation date: August 15, 2015
Submitted by: C4Newell
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It looked like a hummingbird till I got close to it. I believe it is some species of sphinx moth, but I do not know which specific one. There were a few flying around; this one is darker, but I submitted two photos of a ligher-colored one (which was otherwise very similar to this one). It was a sunny day, before noon, but very warm and slightly humid. Not sure what flowers they were attracted to, but they are in the photos so somebody can probably identify them. The bees, hummingbirds, and these moths all LOVE these flowers.
