I found this Turbulent Phosphila caterpillar, just an inch or so long, dining on the underside of a green briar vine leaf. I am just north of Ames, Iowa, out in the country, on a hill, in an area of mixed woods, prairie and cropland, not too far East of I-35 and between Skunk River and Bear Creek.

It was about 2.5 inches long from the head to the tip of the wing. It appeared to be resting on the siding next to our front door. The weather is moderately hot and humid. It didn't seem to mind the camera flash, if that helps. The siding is 4 inches.
