Attributes of Hemaris sentaFamily: Sphinx Moths, Hawkmoths (Sphingidae) Subfamily: Macroglossinae (Macroglossinae) Identification: Scaled areas of wings range from dark brown to light brownish orange. Each wing has a large transparent patch which covers most of the wing surface. Forewing cell lacks dark scales. Life history: Not reported. Flight: . May-August. Wing span: 1 3/8 - 2 inches (3.5 - 5 cm). Caterpillar hosts: Probably snowberry (Symphoricarpos species). Adult food: Flower nectar including kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) in the heath family, and lupines (Lupinus) in the pea family. Habitat: Streamsides and meadows in mountains. Range: British Columbia south to Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado; also North Dakota. Conservation: Not usually required. NatureServe Global Status: G4 - Apparently secure globally, though it might be quite rare in parts of its range, especially at the periphery.
