Subfamily: Erebinae
Identification: Blackish forewing with distinct white reniform and pale orbicular smudge. Each hindwing is black with three round white spots.
Wing Span:
Life History: Adults are diurnal. They may be seen nectaring at flowers or sipping moisture in muddy spots.
Flight: March to June (mostly April to May).
Caterpillar Hosts: New foliage of oaks, Quercus, or chinquapin, Chrysolpis, and possibly manzanita.

Range: Washington, Montana, Utah, and Colorado south to southern California, Baja California Norte, Sonora, and Chihuahua.
