The Confederate
Condica confederata (Grote, 1873)
Family: Noctuidae
Subfamily: Amphipyrinae
Identification: Forewing pearly to reddish gray with black basal patch and broad claviform spot. Note pale median area and two large pale patches at outer margin in the male. Most of the rest of the forewing is shaded with dark reddish gray. Dark shading much more extensive in the female, with only am. line, border of inner margin, outlines of orbicular and reniform spots, and two patches at outer margin pale. Hindwing grayish brown, darker in female than in male.
Wing Span: 3.2-4 cm.
Life History:
Flight: August-October northward; all months in Florida.
Caterpillar Hosts: Spanish needles.

Range: Maine to Florida, west to Wisconsin and Texas. Uncommon northward.
