Red-banded Hairstreak
Calycopis cecrops

Observation date: August 05, 2014
Submitted by: James Rieman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny, hot and humid. This butterfly was perched on a sugar fig leaf.
Status: Resident
Verified by: stomlins701
Verified date: August 05, 2014
Coordinator notes: I believe this sighting is a Red-banded Hairstreak and not a Dusky-blue Grounstreak for the following reasons: 1) the red bands are very wide, characteristic of Red-banded. 2) there is a nearly completely black spot above the blue lunule, characteristic of red-banded. 3) There is no orange cap to the blue lunule. See plate 16 in Butterflies through Binoculars by J. Glassberg, 1999, for a side-by-side photo comparison of these two species. SAT
