Luna moth
Actias luna

Observation date: July 21, 2014

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: He was pretty much motionless. He was on the underside of our patio umbrella. In fact he didn't move at all for literally hours. After dark we turned on the porch light, then apparently sometime after that he decided to finally move. He flew from the umbrella to the door post only a few inches below the coach light on our porch. It is now 12:04 A.M. and he is still there. I first sighted at around 5:30P.M., but my wife first sighted earlier in the day at about 2 P.M. So he has been our guest now for about 10 hours. The weather is mild, temps at around 75 degrees earlier, and around 70 now (at midnight) Air is still, slight occasional breeze. Skies are clear. No clouds.
