Common Wood-Nymph
Cercyonis pegala

Observation date: July 20, 2014
Submitted by: accidentalshrike
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I see these guys all over the place, often mixed in with the more common and smaller Cercyonis oetus, which I find easy to recognize. Several times I have seen Cercyonis that are clearly pegala (usually with yellow on the forewing), but these darker ones confuse me. They are often around willow or aspen stands but can be seen out in the sagebrush as well.

Coordinator notes: Based on the general appearances and the plant background, I would say Cercyonis pegala. Great Basin Wood-Nymph subspecies silvestris is very non-descript and lacks ocelli on the HW like yours.-Ken Davenport
