Appalachian Brown
Satyrodes appalachia

Observation date: July 13, 2014
Submitted by: bauersteven
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I have read the descriptions in Glassberg and looked at as many photos as I can find online and it seems to have more characteristics of Eyed than Appalachian but the habitat was more wooded than open and somewhat, but not very, wet. There were some sedges around (but I don't know what species of sedge) and an open meadow about 100 yards away. I have been told that Eyed Brown would be very unusual away from very wet open areas. I have cropped the original photo to better show the white around the forewing eyespots and,to me, they are ambiguous. Glassberg describes the white around the lowest forewing eyespot on Appalachian Brown as being a complete circle and on Eyed Brown all the forewing eyepots are supposed to be broken circles. On my photo the top three eyespots have broken circles and the fourth has a complete circle. The butterfly was in Doodletown, Bear Mountain State Park, Rockland County, NY. 7-13-14. Thank you. Sincerely, Steve Bauer
