Great Leopard Moth
Hypercompe scribonia

Observation date: July 19, 2014
Submitted by: anni
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: We live in a very quiet, tiny valley, extremely moist with little direct sun. We've frequently observed butterflies and moths we never encountered in other environments, even when living scant miles from this place. This Leopard Moth was beneath a tree, close to the roots, surrounded by forest, fern and peat moss nearby. It displayed no signs of distress, seemed to have merely found it's day time resting place. We've had unusually cool weather here in Central PA these last 2 days, and an unusually ' buggy ' summer thus far despite long stretches of freeze this past winter.
