Hayhurst's Scallopwing
Staphylus hayhurstii

Observation date: July 05, 2014
Submitted by: gunhilda
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was behaving oddly, hunching over the flower like it was trying to hug it (you can sort of see that in the second picture). It's hard to pin it down in words, but it was fluttering, feeding, holding its wings in an unusual manner. Stayed low to the ground, often in shadows, often on the bottom of the flower. On Buttonbush.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: The speckling on the body and wings lead me to believe this is a worn Hayhurst's Scallopwing.
