Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: July 03, 2014
Submitted by: suekh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Very large...@ 6" when wings expanded, body was as thick as a finger furry orange with 2 wing-like antenna. It was in the grass near a small creek...I was mowing the grass and attempted to shoo it...while it did fly it seemed very reluctant to fly and wanted to land and cling to grass in the same spot it had been previously. I went back the next day and it is still in the same spot though clearly alive. In fact there had been a strong rain and wind storm the night before. It did not seem to want to fly about but rather cling to grasses on the ground.
