Ceanothus silkmoth
Hyalophora euryalus

Observation date: June 24, 2014
Submitted by: lknegus
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Slightly muggy in the deep woods in Southern Humboldt County, CA. Deep woods in coastal mountain range. Specimen was found on a Ceanothus leucodermis (Chaparral Whitethorn). Forest is mostly Oak, Madrone, and Whitethorn, with fir. Appears to enjoy eating the young leaves of host plant. Was so still when I found it, I thought it was already pupating, but later it started to be quite active. Eats and poops prolifically. Specimen is hairless with three sets of knobs near "face": first two sets are yellow with black and last set is yellow. Has one set of yellow horns near at the very end of its back. Has black "feet".
