Virginian Tiger Moth or Yellow Woolybear Moth
Spilosoma virginica

Observation date: June 16, 2014

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Host plant was Sage planted in a Terra Cota pot. Weather that day was hot and humid, around 93 degrees. Nearby plants were: Oregano, Thyme, Basil (which a 2nd caterpillar was found on, same species,) Mint, Rosemary, and Lavender. These are hearty eaters and more than quadrupled in size from my first siting about 3-4 days prior. I have also found smaller specimens of same species on my Thyme and Oregano and evidence of 'munching' on my mint and flat leaf Italian Parsley. This area is in part shade. I have been relocating these caterpillars to the back of my yard, away from the Herb and Vegetable Gardens. If need be, I can raise one to adulthood, if properly instructed on their care, etc. We have dogs and several species of wild birds, lizards, snakes, etc. in our yard.
