Gray Hairstreak
Strymon melinus

Observation date: June 11, 2014
Submitted by: sarahlowe427
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found it relaxing on my Mexican sunflowers in my front yard in the cooler part of the morning. It didn't seem to mind me getting close for a picture. It would rub the little points on the back of it's wings together. It was about the size of a nickel maybe just a smidge bigger. The underneath was a tangerine color.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Acacia Hairstreaks live in the northern states where it is cooler. Since I am also a train watcher, I have noted lots of Union Pacific activity in Daggett, which I pass on my way to and from Needles or Arizona to watch or collect butterflies.-Ken Davenport
