Eight-spotted Forester
Alypia octomaculata

Observation date: May 08, 2014
Submitted by: GeorgeButel
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: He was eating some ivy that resembles poison ivy, but with five leaflets. I found him as I was removing the ivy from the house, which is in an extremely rural area (on 56 acres of wooded, hilly land.) Because of the resemblance to poison ivy, I was being extremely cautious about handling everything, including my iPhone, so the picture is not as sharp as it could have been. To avoid letting the ivy touch the iPhone, I had placed the caterpillar on a piece of landscaping timber, so the picture is not where I found him. The second picture is of the ivy; he was underneath a leaf, and is not visible, but you can identify the plant (his food) from the picture. He had several brothers and sisters also partaking of that same ivy, and I found no other specimens on any of the other yard plants. Weather: clear, warm, around 80 degrees as I recall.
