White-lined Sphinx
Hyles lineata

Observation notes: This moth had wings loud enough to really amaze me. This gorgeous creature came in to rest under my porch light to avoid the mist. It has a head to end of wing measurement of 1.5 inches and. This is not including it's antennae. I was in pure amazement, as I have never seen such an enormous moth in Monterey, CA or the surrounding areas.

Coordinator notes: Where I am in SLO county, this moth has been particularly common this year. If you were interested to know, this actually isn't the biggest moth in Monterey County. The Ceanothus silkmoth ( http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Hyalophora-euryalus ), and the Polyphemus moth ( http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Antheraea-polyphemus ) are probably the two biggest moths (by wingspan) regularly found in your county. If you find any other moths, (including smaller species), I encourage you to submitt them, as BAMONA's Monterey County list is rather behind hand when it comes to moths.
