Painted Lichen Moth
Hypoprepia fucosa

Observation date: May 02, 2014
Submitted by: Stuart Marcus
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Trinity River Refuge, using black light.
Status: Resident
Verified by: stomlins701
Verified date: May 08, 2014
Coordinator notes: I believe this is H. fucosa, rather than the suggested id of H. miniata, for the following reasons:1) The photos of H. miniata on MPG and bugguide.net seem to show more color between the bars of gray or grayish-black (ie, the bars are a bit narrower) with a very distinct separation of the bar from the background color, while the bars on H. fucosa seems to be larger with a more diffuse merging into the background color. Regardless of the background color, this seems to be a distinctive characteristic. 2) the background color of H. miniata, whether it be red or golden tends to be a strong, often solid, pigment, not a more diffuse one comprised of red and yellow like in H. fucosa. Given these characteristics, I believe the sighting is H. fucosa. SAT
