Observation notes: This was the third Question Mark butterfly we saw mid-day while walking the Cooks Trail along Sandy Creek in Athens, GA. We were very surprised to see butterflies this early. After a harsher than normal winter, Sunday was 74 degrees, about 13 degrees above normal for this date. The individual we photographed was on the sunny, sandy bank of a small creek surrounded by woods. It had its proboscis extended and appeared to be drinking water while it opened and closed its wings several times. The altitude of the site is 192'. Latitude: 34.000286. Longitude: 83.375236.
