Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: leading edge looks gold to me, have read that females have yellow on under side fore wing. this specimen was very new looking to me and coloring different than any i remember finding. saw this butterfly on deer weed, and it kept going from one clump of flowers to another as if looking for something. Emmel and Emmel, page 61 says Coolidge 1924 says females will search up to a half hour for a suitable site to deposit an egg, This female spent a long time on one lotus ( deer weed) going all around the bush allowing me to get within an inch or two. then finally flying off. saw three other's that were posting on different sides of same hilltop. fighting for position with each other and others. mainly just roosting. they were in various stages of ruffed up from fighting. each other and others in the area of there perch.
