Painted Lady
Vanessa cardui

Observation date: January 02, 2014
Submitted by: Robert Gorman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: fighting with red admiral and other painted ladies for top of a small hill, light breeze sunny, high sixties to low seventies. coast fogged in. about 1400 hrs. also saw gray hair streak. it was much less aggressive and more cooperative, there was a black phebie, small bird trying to get these, that may be where the rest of the hind wings of this insect went? amazing how well butterflies fly with wings and parts missing.
