Observation notes: Fiercely defending it's territory against all other much younger fresher males, this old battle worn male probably survived the winter. It fought off any other males while i tried to get lots of photo's of this and many other butterflies this warm spring day, lots of sycamore and willow oaks many annuals blooming and sage scrub also succulents chalk dudlya and others.sisters, checker spots, buckeye dusky wing skippers pale swallow tail ECT sipping moisture

Coordinator notes: I doubt if this individual survived the winter. P. rutulus can appear very early in the spring.
