Common Buckeye
Junonia coenia

Observation date: November 18, 2013
Submitted by: SeEtta
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in an area that is sheltered. However, though we have had unusually warm temperatures this fall in my town of Canon City, CO we have had a number of nights below freezing so few flowers in bloom and none near this butterfly. There was some rabittbrush with a few flowers still blooming within a few hundred feet.
Status: Temporary Colonist

Coordinator notes: Very late record, perhaps the latest for this butterfly in Colorado (I don't have an up-to-date list but such records are kept). I found a freshly emerged one east of Canon City many years ago but that was in July. It is probably an annual migrant into the area and establishes summer residency, stronger in some years than in others, along the Arkansas River Valley throughout SE Colorado. Mike
