Atlides halesus

Observation date: November 04, 2012
Submitted by: Robert Gorman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Female GPH note lacks blue on fore wing under side, my hands were very salty from eating sunflower seeds. she may have wanted salt, as she climbed onto my finger when i offered it to her. mostly land with wings closed. worked very hard to catch wings open during flight or take off. we saw all females this day at this location. we also saw male's at valecito camp ground. alkali golden bush was the nectar we found them seeking this day. warm clear day. lower colorado desert is a great place to find butterflies in winter, especially in sheltered canyon bottoms where temps can get quite warm. it was probably low to mid eighties mid day.
