Coordinator notes: The Banded Sphinx, E. fasciatus, is very similar to the suggested id of the Vine Sphinx, E. vitis, and can be distinguished as follows: 1) there is a continuous brownish "bar" along the leading edge of the forewing in E. fasciatus, a broken-up bar in E. vitis. 2) E. vitis has a "cross-bar" perpendicular to the leading edge all the way across the forewing close to the body; E. fasciatus "cross-bar" only goes from the trailing edge of the forewing to the middle bar almost parallel to the forewing leading edge. If you put photos of the two species next to each other on your computer, these differences can be readily seen. E. vitis is also resident farther south, in TX, though a stray in OK is possible.
