Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found crawling in my garage in Vilonia Arkansas there is a flower bed with watermelon plant and calalillies in it and grass in yard with one oak tree and some other trees that I do not know their names
Status: Resident
Verified by: stomlins701
Verified date: September 16, 2013
Coordinator notes: Coordinator 1: It appears to be some species of hornworm, but I would like to see better photos of it and more information about the host plant it was using. Perhaps someone who specializes in sphinx moths can help with this. Coordinator 2: I feel confident this is Eumorpha fasciatus, possibly in pre-pupal stage coloring. The caterpillar of this species can be variable, and this initially threw me off. However, the striped markings and location of the spiracles in photos of a green larva are identical to those seen in the sighting photo. Many caterpillars become darker during the pre-pupal stage and so this would account for the reddish-brown coloring. Otherwise, there is also a pink-colored form of this caterpillar, and I have included a link to those photos. http://bugguide.net/node/view/76855 http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/efascfas.htm
