Royal Walnut Moth
Citheronia regalis

Observation date: September 09, 2013

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is a large caterpillar at approximately 4 to 5 inches. I first saw it last night and went to look to see if it was still there today. It has now been on this same tree in approximately the same location for about 24 hours. (since I first saw it) It was eating the tip end of the branch today, but mostly it is inactive. I am worried that it might not be feeling well because it is so sluggish in behavior. The tree it is on looks to be some kind of ash. We cut the tree down 5 years ago and it grew back from the ground, and the height of the caterpillar is about 4 feet. There is also a Pokeberry plant and poison ivy growing under the tree. The caterpillar is still there hanging from the same compound leaf branch. It uses its' back two feet to clasp, and the rest of its' body is hanging down. Weather is very nice - 80's, sunny, and mildly breezy.
