Spotted Tussock Moth or Yellow-Spotted Tiger Moth
Lophocampa maculata

Observation date: August 27, 2013
Submitted by: GlennR900
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Sunny afternoon after a few days of rain. I spotted it crossing a dirt ball field. I thought it was unusual to see it out in the open. I wonder if it had gotten blown out of a tree. There are alders around the park. It didn't want to stop moving, making it difficult to photograph. I've lived in this area for over 50 years and can't recall ever seeing one of these caterpillars before.
