Observation notes: approx. 2 inches in length (maybe slightly longer). was on my deck crawling along my hose when I spotted it. I live in southern British Columbia on the Sunshine Coast. My garden is fairly damp but gets lots of sun. plants in my yard include honeysuckle, tomatoes, various annuals and perennials, green beans, herbs, etc. I've never seen a caterpillar like this before.

Coordinator notes: The horizontal line across the body and bluish "horn" seem characteristic of this species caterpillar in the later instars.Here is a photo off bugguide.net that looks much like the sighting photo. http://bugguide.net/node/view/693628 The suggested id of Sphinx chersis is a much larger caterpillar and would be pretty uncommon or rare in the sighting locale.
