Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I am not well-versed with Satyirums, especially worn individuals. This particular butterfly had traits of both Banded and Hickory Hairstreak, so I thought I'd post it here in hopes that someone would be able to explain why it is one or the other. Found basking in the morning sun on a rock wall outside the main building at Powell Gardens.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: The following Missouri hairstreak species are brown on the ventral side and do not have a red cap on the blue sub marginal spot near the anal angle on the hind wing ventral (HWV).
alcestis – HWV median band fused and pointed
edwardsii – ventral median row of spots rounded and ringed with white
calanus – ventral median row of spots rectangular and blue sub marginal spot on HW does not extend beyond the orange next to it.
caryaevorum – ventral median row of spots rectangular and blue sub marginal spot on HW extend beyond the orange next to it.
m-album – metallic blue on dorsal side
This seems to work for Missouri species but may not work for these species over their entire range.
