Coordinator notes: This is an early, perhaps 3rd, instar (stage) of this caterpillar, also known as the Hickory Horned Devil, although it feeds on many other plant species. It is not poisonous. As bugguide.net says "Although the caterpillar looks fierce, it is harmless". http://bugguide.net/node/view/3559
