Western Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio rutulus

Observation date: August 10, 2013
Submitted by: mpboyle
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I am not a butterfly expert, but I looked around the internet to find information on this particular one. The closest I could come to is the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly. All the information I have found says it only goes West to about the Rockies. I live in the Central Valley of California, so I thought you would be interested in seeing these picture. I took over 50 pix, but since it was flitting around, the best are about 15 pix or so. It stayed in my garden for over 30 minutes. What a pleasure to watch. It was a very warm (95 degree) sunny day and the butterfly seemed to be enjoying his romp on our zinnias and dahlias.

Coordinator notes: This is a Western Tiger Swallowtail. Two-Tailed and Pale Tiger Swallowtails are also in California. Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are not. This coordinator has lived in Stockton and currently in Bakersfield, so I know what is here...but I have collected Eastern Tigers in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.
