Saddleback Caterpillar Moth
Acharia stimulea

Observation date: August 09, 2013

Observation notes: My husband was pruning our knockout rose bush. Something was clearly eating it and it did not look like it was doing well. After he trimmed all of the branches, he noticed a stinging, burning in his hands. He had thought he got hung up with the thorns until he saw three Saddleback Caterpillars on the branches that he cut. They didn't move, they just stayed on the branches and then we put one on the table to get a better look at it. We've never seen anything like it before. And the sting, it's a nasty one.
