Scarlet-Bodied Wasp Moth
Cosmosoma myrodora

Observation date: August 01, 2013
Submitted by: KarenMSmith
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: We found him flying around inside the biology building at UL Lafayette, he probably came in through one of the staircases that are at each corner of the building and open to the air at the bottom of the stairwell. We get a lot of insects that find their way up to the stairwell and don't make it out. He made it all the way up to my lab on the 5th floor where we found him. We followed him out to the hallway and were captivated by his/her beauty. His flight was good, but not very fast. We captured him in a small box, took some photos, and brought him out to the fresh air and released him. My colleague has some better pictures that he took with his camera. This was taken on my iphone. The weather today is hot, 95 degrees, with 51% humidity.
